Why Engineers Struggle in the Job Market — And How You Can Change Your Career Forever
By Arun Aggarwal & Raj Parki | Global Elevator Academy
Introduction: A Harsh Truth We Must Accept Across India—and even globally—there’s a silent crisis brewing. Engineering graduates, especially freshers, are finding it increasingly hard to land meaningful jobs. Employers are frustrated. Students are confused. Parents are worried. But let’s pause here for a moment. Is this a job crisis—or a skill crisis? While lakhs of engineers graduate every year, only a small percentage are employable. Why? It’s not due to lack of degrees. It’s due to the
lack of practical skills, passion, and commitment to learning. In this blog, we will explore both sides of the story—the employer's challenge and the student’s confusion—and then offer
concrete solutions that can transform your engineering career. This is not just about getting a job; it’s about becoming a professional worth hiring, retaining, and promoting.
Chapter 1: The SME Dilemma — A Business Owner’s View As professionals who work with several SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises), especially in the
elevator industry, we face the same challenge repeatedly: “Engineers join. But they don’t stay. They don’t learn. They only chase salaries.” Let’s break it down. ⚙️ The SME Reality Most fresh engineers don’t want to work in an SME. Why? Because:
- They think SMEs offer low salaries.
- They feel the work isn’t glamorous or “big brand” enough.
- They want to use SMEs as a stepping stone, not a career.
You can spot the problem on Day 1. The same evening someone joins, their updated
CV is already on job portals, chasing the next job offer. There's
no interest in learning, no desire to contribute, and certainly no respect for the opportunity given. And here’s the real irony:
most of them don’t even have strong subject knowledge.
Chapter 2: The Education Gap — Four Years Wasted? Let’s face it. Many engineering graduates today lack even
basic understanding of their core subjects.
- Ask a Mechanical Engineer to explain Bernoulli’s Principle, and he struggles.
- Ask an Electrical Engineer to draw a basic wiring diagram, and she’s unsure.
- Ask a Civil Engineer to read a plan, and he blinks in confusion.
We’re not blaming students. The
college system has failed too—the focus on rote learning, outdated syllabi, and the obsession with marks has killed curiosity. Add to that poor English communication skills, no hands-on training, and zero industry exposure. The result?
“A degree without direction. A certificate without skill.”
And that’s why employers say:
"Why did he even do engineering? He might have done better without the degree."
Chapter 3: The Hard Question — So, What Can You Do? If you’re an engineering student or recent graduate,
this is your turning point. Either you let the system define your career—or you take control and define your future yourself. Here’s a detailed,
step-by-step roadmap to reinvent yourself as an engineer with
purpose, skill, and employability.
Chapter 4: The Self-Reinvention Roadmap for Engineers ✅
Step 1: Accept Reality, But Don’t Give Up You’ve completed your degree. Good. But if you're not confident in your knowledge or skill, accept that fact with courage. Denial will only delay your growth. Now commit to this one idea:
“I may have wasted the first four years. But the next 12 months will be my turnaround year.”
✅
Step 2: Re-Read Your Engineering Books — But With Passion This Time No exams. No semester pressure. No marks.
Just
pure curiosity-driven learning. Start from scratch. Revisit your textbooks. Pick the ones you never really understood in college.
- Make notes as if you’re preparing to teach someone.
- Spend 4 hours daily reading, understanding, and solving real problems.
- Don’t just memorize—visualize and apply.
- If you're from mechanical or electrical stream, focus on drawings, diagrams, tools, and real-world machines.
✅
Step 3: Pick Your Favorite Subjects and Master Them Not all 40 subjects will excite you. That’s okay. Pick the top
3 to 5 subjects that genuinely interest you. Then become a
master in those.
- Study in-depth.
- Follow YouTube videos, practical case studies, and simulations.
- Build small projects or models.
- Join LinkedIn communities in your field.
Let your knowledge of those topics be so strong that
no interview can shake you.
✅
Step 4: Make a List of Dream Companies (Not Just Big Ones) Your dream company doesn’t have to be an MNC. It can be:
- A startup building innovative products
- A fast-growing SME with good mentorship
- A research company or public sector unit
Choose companies that work in your area of interest. Study them, follow their leadership team, understand their products and problems. Then align your
resume and preparation around that.
✅
Step 5: Improve Your Communication Skills This is non-negotiable. If you can’t express your ideas clearly in English or any professional language, you will be stuck—no matter how brilliant you are.
Practice daily: - Watch English news every evening (8:00 to 10:00 PM) – NDTV, BBC, CNN
- Read one article a day from The Hindu, TOI, or Economic Times
- Practice speaking in front of a mirror
- Record yourself. Correct your tone, fluency, and vocabulary
Also, start writing:
- Your learnings
- Projects
- Subject summaries
This improves
both writing and thinking clarity.
✅
Step 6: Build a Powerful Resume A resume is
not just a list of marks or degrees. It’s your personal
sales brochure. Include:
- Your best subjects
- Projects (even self-initiated)
- Software/tools you’ve learned (AutoCAD, MATLAB, PLCs, etc.)
- Online certifications
- Soft skills
- Career goals
Use tools like
Canva or
Novoresume for design. Keep it 1 page if fresher, 2 pages max.
✅
Step 7: Learn Through Internships or Volunteering Even if you don’t get a job, offer to work
free for 2 months in a local industry or factory. The learning and exposure will be priceless. And often, unpaid interns turn into paid employees if they show dedication.
✅
Step 8: Choose Passion Over Pay for First 3 Years Your
first job is your foundation—not a jackpot. Work for a
good boss, a
challenging environment, and
maximum exposure—even if the salary is low. Stay for
3 years. Learn everything. Document every project. Speak to customers, vendors, seniors. After 3 years,
you will be worth double or triple the salary of those who changed 4 companies in 3 years but learned nothing.
✅
Step 9: Make 2025 Your Year of Transformation Let this year—not tomorrow, not someday—be your turning point. Give 12 months to:
- Read deeply
- Work sincerely
- Communicate clearly
- Build strong connections
You will emerge as a
professional with purpose, potential, and power—ready to work anywhere in the world.
